CHILD MEDICAL EXAMS
Our center has a dedicated medical provider right on-site. Forensic medical examinations are performed by a medical provider specifically trained in the evaluation and treatment of child sexual and physical abuse. The provider’s primary goal is to ensure each child feels as comfortable as possible during their medical assessment.
We understand that child victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect often have concerns about their bodies that they may be hesitant to express. Our team is skilled in building trust with the child and moving at a pace that respects their autonomy, allowing us to perform a thorough examination while ensuring their emotional and physical comfort.

Medical exams are conducted in our child-friendly exam rooms by our dedicated in-house medical team. We specialize in evaluating, examining, and providing treatment recommendations for individuals who may have experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect.

During a medical exam, we gather important information to assess the child's physical health and well-being. This includes a detailed medical history, any concerns or symptoms the child may be experiencing, and a thorough physical examination. The exam may also include documentation of any injuries, signs of abuse, or neglect. Our goal is to identify any medical conditions that require treatment, ensure the child's safety, and provide recommendations for follow-up care if needed. All findings are documented and, if necessary, shared with law enforcement or child welfare as part of the investigative process.

Child medical exams ensure the physical health and well-being of children who may have experienced abuse or neglect. These exams are essential for several reasons:
Health and Safety: The primary goal is to assess and address any medical conditions or injuries related to the abuse, and to ensure the child’s overall health.
Evidence Collection: In cases of physical or sexual abuse, the medical exam can provide critical evidence that may be used in an investigation or court proceedings.
Reassurance: Medical exams can help reassure children and their caregivers that their bodies are healthy. This can be especially important when children have fears or misconceptions about their physical well-being following abuse.
Trauma-Informed Care: The exams are conducted by trained professionals in a child-friendly, supportive environment, helping to reduce trauma and provide compassionate care.
Comprehensive Care: By offering medical exams alongside other services such as forensic interviews and therapy, the CAC ensures that the child receives holistic care in one place, reducing the number of times they need to recount their experience.

If your child is afraid or changes their mind about the medical exam, we will prioritize their comfort and emotional well-being. Our team is trained in trauma-informed care and will work at your child's pace, ensuring they feel safe and supported throughout the process.
If your child expresses fear or discomfort, we can pause or stop the exam at any time. Children are never forced to participate in any part of the exam. We explain each step of the process in a way that’s appropriate for their age and developmental level, allowing them to make informed decisions. Our goal is to build trust and respect their autonomy while ensuring their health and safety. If necessary, we can reschedule the exam for another time when the child feels more comfortable.
-
The child and the medical provider have a confidential conversation before the child is escorted to a child-friendly exam room. In this space, the child can choose to have their parent or guardian present. They will change into a gown, and when the child feels ready to begin the exam, we will start by taking vital signs, such as height and weight. Following this, a comprehensive head-to-toe examination will be conducted. This exam may also involve collecting lab samples for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and capturing photos or videos if needed, in addition to addressing any other immediate medical concerns that may arise.
Comfort Measures: The child will be reassured throughout the process. The medical provider will explain each step in a child-friendly manner and encourage the child to ask questions.
Physical Examination: The exam itself will be conducted in a private, child-friendly environment. The medical professional will perform a thorough physical examination, which may include checking vital signs and examining specific areas of concern.
Documentation of Findings: Any injuries, signs of abuse, or other relevant findings will be documented. This documentation can be crucial for investigations and potential legal proceedings.
Supportive Care: Throughout the exam, the child will be encouraged to express any discomfort or fear. The medical team will respect their boundaries and can pause or stop the exam if needed.
Post-Exam Discussion: After the exam, the medical professional will discuss the findings with the child and their caregiver, providing recommendations for any necessary follow-up care or treatment.
Referral to Resources: If appropriate, the medical team may also connect the family with additional resources, such as counseling or support services, to assist in the child’s healing process.
The entire process is designed to be as gentle and supportive as possible, prioritizing the child’s emotional and physical well-being.
